Export trading company (ETC) An ETC scouts for hot market trends and focuses on foreign buyers that want to sell those exports. They then match the buyers with domestic manufacturers who want to export their goods. The export company often will take temporary ownership of the goods while in transit, and after they distribute the goods, they make a commission.  Export management company (EMC) EMCs work on behalf of the seller. They tend to specialize in a product niche or industry. If a furniture maker wants to sell to other countries, they’d pay an EMC to find dealers and distributors in an overseas market. The EMC would arrange safe and secure shipping, and handle paperwork. An EMC receives a salary, commission, or retainer.  Import-export merchants These free-agent intermediaries discover and directly purchase various kinds of goods from a domestic company or overseas manufacturer and then resell them at a markup. In this import-export business type, the merchant takes on all the risk, but the profit potential may be higher.

Uniform Intermodal Interchange & Facilities Access Agreement

  The only standard industry contract that governs the interchange of equipment between intermodal trucking companies and equipment providers (ocean carriers, railroads & equipment leasing companies). Participation in the UIIA increases operational efficiencies and eliminates the need to manage multiple interchange contracts and insurance filings.                            UIIA currently has over 13,000 Motor Carriers and 58 Equipment Provider signatories and is utilized for approximately 95% of all North American intermodal equipment interchanges.                            The Intermodal Interchange Executive Committee is the ten-member group of participating Ocean, Rail,Motor Carrier and Equipment Leasing Company representatives that oversees the administration of the UIIA. Driver Vehicle Examination Report Service

                           The Driver Vehicle Examination Report Service (DVER) provides an efficient method for Intermodal Equipment Providers (IEPs) and Motor Carriers (MCs) to be notified that a DVER has been issued on intermodal equipment. The DVER service is currently offered at no charge to GIER IEP subscribers and UIIA MC participants as a value-added service to the GIER and UIIA programs.                            

Benefits Of The DVER Service

                           

  • Notifies intermodal equipment providers and motor carriers that a DVER has been issued on intermodal equipment. IANA has established a direct interface with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that allows timely delivery of the DVER notification.

  • Sends violation details via XML, as well as PDF e-mail delivery.

  • Provides web portal access for DVER management, storage, lookups, retrieval and reporting. 
  •                                
  • Provides expanded reporting functionalities to generate reports by inspection level, violation type and/or specific violation code.

  • Captures electronically the transfer of liability, damage and indemnification set forth under the UIIA from the originating Motor Carrier to the receiving Motor Carrier when a street interchange is performed.
  • Stops the clock on the import move and begins it on the export move for street turns.
  • Validates the receiving Motor Carrier has a valid UIIA interchange with the UIIA Equipment Provider(s) involved in the street interchange transaction.
  • Interfaces with IANA's Global Equipment Registry (GIER) application to confirm the SCAC Code for the chassis Equipment Provider to validate the interchange status between the Motor Carrier and the chassis provider (as long as the chassis EP is a UIIA participant).
